David Suzuki Peter Matthiessen, born in 1927, is a writer, naturalist, and explorer who has been praised as one of the "shamans of literature." Mr. Matthiessen, whose work has been influenced by his practice of Zen Buddhism and his interest in indigenous cultures, lives in Sagaponack, New York.

David Suzuki David Suzuki, the author of The Sacred Balance, Time to Change, and Earth Time, is a scientist and environmental activist who explores issues of technology, social justice, and politics within the context of the ecosphere. Mr. Suzuki was born in 1936 in Vancouver, British Columbia, and was interned at a Japanese relocation camp during the war years. He attended Amherst College in Massachusetts and received his Ph.D. in zoology from the University of Chicago. Mr. Suzuki, who has been honored with the United Nations Environment Medal, is the host of the Canadian television programs Planet for the Taking and The Nature of Things. Mr. Suzuki is also the founder of an organization that tries to find solutions to environmental problems and to promote ways of life that are ecologically sustainable, fulfilling, and just. He has written, "Each of us is quite literally air, water, soil, and sunlight, and what cleanses and renews these fundamental elements of life is the web of living things on the planet."
