Welcome to Hell: Live Under Siege in Gaza

MOHAMMED OMER – Award-winning independent journalist and photographer from the Gaza Strip, and author of the Rafah Today blog. Mr. Omer was born and raised in the Rafah refugee camp in the Gaza Strip. In 2008 he became the youngest journalist ever to be awarded the Martha Gellhorn Prize for Journalism. He was honored as “the voice of the voiceless” whose reporting constituted a “humane record of the injustice imposed on a community forgotten by much of the world.” As he was traveling back to the Gaza Strip from the award ceremony in London, he was beaten and humiliated by Israeli soldiers at the Allenby Bridge border crossing. His treatment precipitated an international outcry.

Following his short film and presentation, Mohammed will be joined in conversation by:
DAHR JAMAIL – Journalist, author, frequent reporter on Democracy Now!, and co-recipient with Omer of the 2008 Martha Gellhorn Prize for Journalism:Dahr Jamail’s Mideast Dispatches.

Friday, April 9, 6:30 pm, at the Unitarian Congregation, 107 W. Barcelona Rd, Santa Fe, NM. Suggested Donation $5.

Sponsored by: Another Jewish Voice Santa Fe and the Middle East Peace and Justice Alliance.

Endorsed by: Veterans for Peace, Joan Duffy Chapter, Santa Fe; and Santa Fe Women in Black.

Mr. Omer’s US visa application, eventually granted, was delayed by the US Consulate in the Netherlands, where Omer currently resides to continue his medical treatment. This event, and Omer’s other US appearances, were put on hold, then hastily rescheduled when his visa was finally approved.
