Eastern Navajo Diné Against Uranium Mining, Crownpoint, NM
Eastern Navajo Dine Against Uranium Mining (ENDAUM) is working to stop the construction and operation of three new uranium solution mines in Navajo communities in northwestern New Mexico. Individuals from this organization are concerned about the impacts of proposed uranium solution mining on the Crownpoint region’s sole source of drinking water, the Westwater Canyon Aquifer.
Santa Fe Indian School
This grant is in support of the Spoken Word program at the school. The Spoken Word program, initiated and directed by teacher Tim McLaughlin, has gained national and international recognition over the last seven years at such competitions as the National Youth Poetry Festival and the Baltic Cultural Exchange in Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania.
David Foster Wallace
“The whole trans-Pecos is haunted. Some of this is the high desert, where nothing has a shadow and stormclouds seem just out of reach. Some of it is the quiet, which is so profound it becomes its own hum. It is country that wants nothing from you, where it becomes impossible to take yourself seriously. A fruitful state to be in, work-wise, usually.”

We are delighted to announce that poets Sherwin Bitsui and Atsuro Riley both are recipients of a 2011 Lannan Literary Fellowship.
