Penn Szittya
Penn Szittya has taught literature at Boston University, Emory, Princeton, Johns Hopkins, and Georgetown University, where he chaired the Department of English for many years and where one of his most remarkable students, Dinaw Mengestu, began the critically acclaimed novel The Beautiful Things That Heaven Bears.
In 2005, he directed Lannan-sponsored programs at Georgetown and was involved in the establishment of the Lannan Chair, the first endowed professorship in the English Department. With Szittya’s guidance, the Lannan Center for Poetics and Social Justice was created at Georgetown in 2006-2007.
Szittya now teaches annually at the Villa le Balze in Fiesole, Italy, and lives on Cape Cod, Massachusetts.
