Avi Lewis
Avi Lewis is an award-winning Canadian television journalist and documentary filmmaker. His productions include The Take, which followed Argentina’s new movement of worker-run businesses. A story of hope and resistance in the global economy, it was released theatrically in Canada, the U.S., and across Europe, premiering at the Venice Film Festival. The New York Times called it “a stirring, idealistic documentary.” Its Canadian Broadcasting Corporation telecast was nominated for four Gemini Awards and won the International Jury prize at the American Film Institute festival in Los Angeles.
In 2009-2010 Lewis produced and hosted Al Jazeera English Television’s Fault Lines—a biweekly show that explored below the surface of U.S. politics, with town hall discussions on race and the recession, midterm elections and U.S. policy in Afghanistan. The program included interviews with Arundhati Roy and Danny Glover, documentaries reporting from inside the U.S.—from the Gulf oil spill to Alaska to tea party politics—and outside the U.S.—from Bolivia during the climate conference, Haiti both before and directly after the earthquake, and from Honduras after the coup. In 2008, he was the host of Al Jazeera’s Inside USA, a weekly series examining the real issues at stake in the U.S. presidential election. Currently he is directing a new documentary about climate change called The Message: What Climate Change Is Telling Us About How Our Species Must Evolve.
