Subhankar Banerjee was born in Berhampore, India in 1967. He spent his childhood there and received his bachelor’s degree in engineering. In 1990 he moved to the United States to pursue graduate studies, where he obtained master’s degrees in physics and computer science from the New Mexico State University in Las Cruces.
Mr. Banerjee worked in the scientific fields for six years, with Los Alamos National Lab in New Mexico and Boeing in Seattle. In 2000 he left science behind for a career in photography that stemmed from his childhood passion for painting, coupled with a deep love and concern for the wilderness and disappearing indigenous cultures. Over the past decade, he has worked tirelessly on behalf of the conservation of eco-culturally significant areas of the Arctic and to raise awareness about indigenous human rights and climate change. He is editor of the anthology Arctic Voices: Resistance at the Tipping Point. His other publications include Arctic National Wildlife Refuge: Seasons of Life and Land; Arctic Wings: Birds of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge; Subhankar Banerjee: The Last Wilderness, Photographs of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge; Subhankar Banerjee: Resource Wars; The Alaska Native Reader: History, Culture, Politics; A Keener Perception: Ecocritical Studies in American Art History; Subhankar Banerjee: Photographs; and Subhankar Banerjee: Where I Live I Hope to Know.
In 2011 the Lannan Foundation made a grant to the Amon Carter Museum of American Art in support of its solo exhibition and catalogue, Subhankar Banerjee: Where I Live I Hope to Know, on view from May 14 until August 28, 2011.
