Stuart Arends

New Mexico-based artist Stuart Arends’ sculptures are concise and exact mediations on line and form, with veil-like colors layered by wax, pencil and paint. The artist has said of these ingredients: “I look on the paint I use like blood, the wax like flesh, the wood and steel like bone.” Represented in the Lannan Collection are both steel and wooden pieces from Arends’ Wedge series and his Stanza dell’Amore work.

Stuart Arends was born in Waterloo, Iowa, and received his M.F.A. from Otis Art Institute in Los Angeles, California. He has been the subject of numerous solo exhibitions including Stormy Monday: New Works by Stuart Arends at James Kelly Contemporary in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
